USPS Postage Rate Increase in Effect May 12, 2008
Starting May 12th, it will cost you an additional penny to purchase first class stamps.
On May 12 the Postal Service will adjust prices for its services. While the most visible change is the 1-cent increase for First-Class Mail letters, the changes are broader and include prices that could save you real dollars when shipping packages:
- Reduced Express Mail prices for items shipped to addresses closer to home
- Lower online postage prices for Express Mail and Priority Mail (domestic and international)
- Volume Express Mail price rebates for frequent shippers
- Additional flat-rate box prices for Priority Mail
The USPS will be adjusting the prices for the following shipping services – Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, Parcel Return Service, and International Mail. For the first time their pricing will include commercial volume and contract prices, rebates, online price reductions, and other new incentives.
A First-Class Mail stamp will be 42¢. Customers can continue to use the Forever Stamps that they purchased prior to May 12 at 41¢, even after the price change. The post office will have 5 billion Forever Stamps in stock to meet increased demand before the price change. They will have a 62¢ stamp available shortly after May 12 for 1- ounce non-machinable First-Class Mail letters, such as square greeting cards.
Here is the new first class mail pricing breakdown:
- First Class Mail letter (1 oz) – .42 cents
- First Class Mail letter (2 oz) – .59 cents
- Postcard – $.27 cents
- First Class Mail large envelope (2 oz) – $1.00
- Certified Mail – $2.70
- First Class Mail International to Canada and Mexico – $.72 cents
- First Class Mail International to all other countries (1 oz) – $.94 cents
