You just ran across a web page that you would like to share with a client or colleague – did you know that you can send the page itself instead of the link? Just press Command – I and a dialog box will appear asking for the email address of the person you want to send the web page to. Just enter their email address, type a short message, and click Send. The email recipient will see the page right in their email application.

Note: the above only works in Safari.

If you are using Firefox, select File, send link and your email program will open with the link embedded in the message area.

Since we are cleaning ‘house’ this month, let’s not forget about our computer.

The attachments you receive in email or in the outgoing messages in your Sent mailbox, can chew up a lot of disk space. Did you know that Mail can remove attachments from stored messages. Important to note: if you have already saved a copy of the attachments elsewhere, using this feature is a good idea.

Locate one or more messages with attachments and choose Message – remove attachments.

Removing attachments only removes the attachment from the message and will leave the original text intact. So, you won’t lose any text in the process and all of your e-mails will still be indexed by Spotlight.

If you have mail that is older than one year, it is clogging up your inbox and taking up some valuable computer space. There is a feature in Mail called Smart Mailbox which helps you do some fast email house cleaning.

Control-Click on the email account (of your inbox if you don’t have multiple accounts), choose New Smart Mailbox from the contextual menu. When the Smart Mailbox appears, choose Date Received.

From the next pop-up menu over, choose “is before the date” and in the last field, enter a date that is approximately one year before today’s date. Click OK and all your email which is one year old (or older) will appear in the new Smart Mailbox. If you wish to delete old email messages, click on the Smart Mailbox, press Command-A (to select all) or highlight the messages you wish to delete and then press the Delete key.

Going forward all email that is more than one year old will appear in that Smart Mailbox so your Inbox will never have more than one year of archived messages.

The Mac Dock is that strip of icons located at the bottom of your computer screen. The Dock is a place where you store the icons for the applications that you use frequently. Did you know that you can move the Dock to the left or right side and you can even make it smaller or larger. The Dock cannot be moved to the top though. If you have an icon on the dock that you do not use, you can just drag it up to remove it. Note that you are not deleting the program, just deleting it from your dock.

How to adjust your system preferences for the dock:

Open up System Preferences (icon in the dock with the gears)

Click on dock located in the Personal section

To adjust the size of the icons, drag the slider to either left for smaller or right for larger icons

Magnification – drag the slider toward “max” to enlarge the icon when the pointer is over them

Minimize using – choose the effect used when you minimize a window – default is scale effect.

To move your dock to the left or right, you do this through the Position on Screen area

Animate opening applications – select this checkbox to make the icons bounce when you open an application

Automatically hide and show the Dock – select this to hide the dock when you are not using it. If you want to see the dock, move the pointer to the bottom or side of the screen to view it.
